Made to Order Lightening McQueen Canvases - Monday 28th December
This week I have been designing, building and hanging a pair of customised Lightening McQueen canvases for a four year old little boys bedroom...
.....
After much organising I finally arranged to deliver them on Christmas Eve, only to have car trouble and end up stranded at the clients house for nearly two hours waiting for the RAC! I actually thought Christmas at the Sharkey household may have to be cancelled only to finally get back home and find my amazing family had picked up my to-do list where I had left off and had completed everything for me... all that was left to do was to make the cranberry sauce!
Love you, you lovely lot, thank you for all the support that you have given me this year with my new venture. I still can't believe what a busy few months I have had and struggle to take it all in!
Thank you to everyone that has sent in a task request I truly am very grateful. xx

A Million Christmas Wishes! - Thursday 18th December
Most of us have a million and one things to do at Christmas so I had a feeling I would be on the busy side this month.
It is lovely to see I am still getting repeat requests for help, from people I have already completed tasks for. I am currently altering and revamping a gorgeous party frock for the Christmas season. This is for a lady who I completed some alterations for back in the summer. The dress is really beautiful and hopefully she will go off to her Christmas party feeling like a million dollars, with her unique made to measure gown!
I have also been asked to come up with a nativity costume for a client I made a cake for at Halloween. Her son is playing a candle (nativity plays seemed to have changed since I was an angel at school - my daughter is a hummingbird!) so I have been busily creating a column tunic and freestanding headdress for them.
Anyway am trying not to think about my own Christmas jobs, I just wish there was a website somewhere that I could contact to get some help!! ;)
Merry Christmas everyone from aMillionJobsToDo...

Personalised Hooded Christmas Presents - Thursday 3rd December
Another task request from aMillionJobsToDo’s greatest supporter Gemma Tinson-Webb! Gemma decided to get me to make personalised hoodies for all of her nieces and nephews this year.
After I had completed the task I even decided to copy her idea and set about making some shark design hoodies for all of my own nephews!
Thanks Gemma for another great request and for inspiring my own Christmas presents!

Tiger Tiger - Friday 27th November
I have just finished another novelty cake job! This time a tigers head complete with whiskers... very complex I might add!

I love these challenging designs and the success of my recent cakes has spurred me into making a novelty cake portfolio web page so please take a look for more examples... alternatively contact me now with your own specifications.

Silver Sea Urchins - Wednesday 18th November
Possibly one of my most unusual and interesting tasks so far...
 |
A friend of a friend who had been following the site since the beginning got in touch with her task request.
She had recently got engaged whilst scuba diving when her very inventive and romantic fiancé had hid a message in a sea urchin!
Taking this as inspiration she asked me to come up with a method of coating some tiny sea urchins in silver and attaching them to chains for her bridesmaids to wear.
|
After various different test pieces I was finally able to strengthen the urchins enough to use for the jewellery and I was truly amazed by the results!
Another very varied day at the office

Leather Cowgirl Costume - Sunday 8th November
As part of the 'Wild Wild West' themed party that I am involved with I have had the opportunity to dust of my old leather working tools from my uni days and have been busy this weekend knocking up a mini leather skirt and waist coat for the birthday girl. I had a great time creating patterns and hammering away and think she will look very cow girlish on the day!
I hope she enjoys her party and the arrangements are in full swing.

A Banoffee Pie! - Saturday 3rd October 2009
 |
Another crazy aMillionJobs style day! This afternoon was spent making a banoffee pie for someone who was meant to be taking a homemade dessert to a dinner party, I just hope she pulls it off and they all believe it was made by her! Then this evening I have been selecting pantone shades for some t-shirt designs that a previous client is putting into production.
|
One of the most interesting things about this concept is how different each and every task is and how I literally never know what I could be doing next – I love it, and it certainly keeps me on my toes!

Little Girls Bedroom - Wednesday 30th September 09
Another nice job today for a friend of a friend. She had heard about a million jobs and was looking for a revamp for her daughter’s bedroom. I did another little girls room back in August with vinyl stickers so I suggested this idea.
 |
I have now spent the day at the client's home and created the design on site.
By the end of the session the room looked amazing (even if I do say so myself!) I had created a magical scene; full of brightly coloured fairies, butterflies and dragonflies that both mother and daughter were extremely pleased with.

Personalised Wedding Cushions - Saturday 26th September 09
I really must thank Gemma Tinson-Webb for all her support with aMillionJobsToDo!
Not only does she seem to be trying to single handily buy me my dream home (I must be on job 7 by now!) but also whenever I seem to start a job for her, someone else seems to see what I am doing and I end up with another order for the same thing!
Her latest task request was for me to design and make a tasteful personalised wedding gift. Together we decided on a pair or personalised Mr and Mrs Rochester cushions and I set about constructing a pair from pewter taffeta and appliquéd sequins and embroidery, half way through the production process a visitor to my home commented how much they liked them and that they were going to a wedding the next day. Surprise surprise I found myself saying it would be no trouble to knock up a second set overnight and I suddenly had another order!
After a busy few hours though both sets were complete and I had two happy customers, who tell me both happy couples' are thrilled with their unique gifts!

A Couple of Varied Requests Received - Thursday 24th September 09
Today I have had two really interesting new task requests; one to source a metal detector for a local lady and another to act as a 'boss' for a self employed designer! The boss job will involve me making sure that the designer completes all their paperwork each week and I am sure that I will enjoy bossing someone else about a bit!
These are great though, please keep them coming in people!!

Another Radio Interview Under My Belt! - Friday 18th September 09

Another radio interview completed today for BBC Radio Oxford (Click here to listen). I found this one quite nerve wracking but luckily me sister was in Oxford for the weekend and was able to come with me for a little bit of moral support!
I was actually live on air for about 20 minutes and I think it went fairly well. All those years of teaching teenagers definitely come in handy for this sort of thing; I seem to be able to string a sentence together under pressure! Not sure how much I am looking forward to doing TV interviews though, my hands seem to take on a mind of their own when I get going!
Many thanks to Jo Thoenes and her team for inviting me on the show.

Local Celebrity - New News Paper Articles - Thursday 17th September 09
Sorry it's been a while, have been very busy!
Well the interview that I did for the Oxford Times In Business supplement came out today. I was really pleased with the article and the photo that they used! The article really explained the concept well and was really positive. It also ran in the Oxford Mail today too, as part of their employment feature so all in all a great day for press exposure.
I have had some lovely emails from people congratulating me on the concept and offering their services so I am really happy with the progress that I am making. It amazes me how well the idea has been received and that every day people all over the world are looking at the site and like it enough to email me and offer encouragement, I really couldn’t be happier with the way things are going.

Start Up Company Design Work - Tuesday 8th September 09
I have had a great job in today to help a start up business with all their creative design work for their new company. Already I am buzzing with ideas of how to develop an amazing brand for them, and I can’t wait to get to work... first task logo design.
I think this kind of request is my favourite, I guess having recently gone through all the stress and confusion of starting a new brand, helping other people do the same gives me real satisfaction.

More Jobs, a PA & a Photo Shoot - Monday 24th August 09
Another interesting day, the photographer from the Oxford Times Inbusiness feature came to take some pictures for the September issue this morning. I find things like this quite difficult as I am not a massive fan of having my photograph taken, but surprisingly it went really well.
Along with the photo session, there has been an amazingly nice article found about me today at www.entrepreneur.co.uk, so many thanks to George Marshall for that, I hope he will continue to follow my progress!
I also have lots of interesting job request in at the moment including a request for some work in Spanish which could be quite challenging. I am also sending an email shot out this week based on kids returning to school and the possible tasks I could complete - so please keep sending in your tasks!
I have decided to definitely get someone to give me a hand too. My new PA, Steph, is amazingly organised and will be starting in 2 weeks. She will be giving me a hand with all the computer based stuff and also with all the social networking side of my marketing and PR!

More Jobs Completed - Saturday 22nd August 09
Just off to bed!
Am in Sheffield and have been doing a job for a new start up business called Mukless, who are a mobile valeting service. They wanted some bespoke uniform creating to match their new website (also produced by aMillionJobsToDo!). The uniforms have turned out really well (photos to follow) but were pretty time consuming, hence the hour! The client is really pleased with the results though so it has been worth it.
I am very excited to be working in different parts of the country now too..., not so exciting though was driving halfway to the M1 only to realise I had forgotten some of my materials, and having to drive home again to get them!
Right I am exhausted and have a million things to continue tomorrow so am off to bed.

New Total & TV Formats - Thursday 20th August 09
Wow, more jobs completed with the new total standing at approx £4000! I'm really quite proud of myself, I am sleep deprived and have worked so hard for this money but it all seems worth it somehow. I just feel though that I need a really huge task for a substantial fee and it would really help to kick start the concept properly - anyone got any suggestions, please keep your tasks coming in!

Had a fantastic meeting with Kevin Jessup from Variety Productions this evening, to discuss possible format ideas for TV, looks like we could start filming next year, am very excited and would hope the exposure could really help.

My First Radio Interview & Media Media Media! - Tuesday 18th August 09
 |
Been a busy lady again today! The day began with a nerve wracking wait to appear on JACK FM radio station. The interview took place over the phone and I had driven over to my mothers to make sure there was someone to take care of the children while I was live on air. I decided it would be a good idea to take the call outside to muffle the noise, only to find someone had got a pneumatic drill on the go at 8am in the morning! Luckily I took the call inside and the children were brilliant! I had been really worried about going blank or stuttering through the whole thing but managed to stay calm and focused and I think I answered all the questions pretty well.
|
I also had an interview with the Oxford Times for their Inbusiness feature this afternoon, (to be published in the September edition). They also want to send a photographer round on Monday to take some pictures of me doing different tasks!
In addition this evening I had to attend a council planning meeting with the gentleman I had conducted the poll for, to present the findings. After the open forum session that he spoke in, we were approached by a journalist from the Oxford Mail which could prove useful to the bungalow campaign and also in promoting my concept!

The Save or Destroy Story Continues - Monday 17th August 09

|
Had a follow up day today on the ‘Save or Destroy’ bungalow job that I carried out recently.
I was commissioned to return to all of the houses that we visited during the poll to deliver the findings of the ballot. I've managed to deliver (along with my team of helpers) to all 1200 houses on the list in one day, which is a real achievement! We are all worn out, but pleased to have got everything done.

We have also been delivering information about aMillionJobsToDo... at the same time so hopefully that should generate some new job requests as well.

Help Needed - Thursday 13th August 09
I have had another interesting job on this week, decorating a little girl’s bedroom. The client had shown me a picture of a swirly pattern which I then developed and added fairies, dragonflies and butterflies to. The room looked really good once I had finished and both mother and daughter were extremely pleased with the results. This job has also resulted in another, as the mother has now asked for one of my personalised baby vests for her new baby.
Things are going well, and I am really pleased with the level of interest this is receiving, I just have to stop myself from getting too overwhelmed! I have hired some help for various tasks, but I am thinking of getting some permanent help in the next few weeks. I am so busy now with the actual job requests that I need someone to help me keep on top of the emails and stuff, just updating my blog, twitter and facebook pages could be a full time job for someone!
I am also still looking for service providers to help with the overwhelming task load that I am currently juggling so anyone interested or looking to advertise through the site, please contact me ASAP!
Anyway off back to my million jobs to do!

New Jobs and UKPreneur.co.uk - Friday 7th August 09
 |
Have received a really cool job today to make a personalised baby gift for a lady, and also a duvet set for someone else's little boy, I love it when I get such varied task requests, it really keeps me on my toes.
Have also been contacted to see if I could assist another company with their marketing, so it will be interesting to see what we can work out for that.
|
Last night I published the new PR at approximately 9pm and it generated nearly 800 unique web hits in 3 hours... with a lot coming over from Reddit. It's all so exciting but I just need to keep on top of the PR!
The new total received for work completed, is now £3427.08!! This figure includes all expenses taken off and is purely my profit. I am really pleased with how much I've made so far I know it's a long way off but I couldn't have done it without your task requests so please keep them coming in!
I also received an interesting email the other day from a guy who wanted a photo of me to post a blog about aMillionJobsToDo... on UKPreneur (now live). He says he has 1000's of followers too so I hope that this it might also help generate some new interest. I have just read it but it also seems to have grabbed hold of the £1 for a million jobs idea, discussing how long it might take for me to make a million... I'm really pleased that people are enjoying following the progress and are debating my concept however I do have to say that I have not yet accepted a single job for a single £1! The tasks received so far have averaged at approximately £700 a week so that would cut his estimated frame of 142,857 weeks down to about 1428 weeks which is really a huge difference - I agree it's still an extremely long time frame but it's a step in the right direction!
Right I really do have aMillionJobsToDo, so best crack on

General Updates - Thursday 6th August 09
Have had another frantic week! Although managed to take a couple of days off to celebrate my birthday which was lovely!
On the work front the jobs are still coming in and have been working on three separate tasks today alone, so am busy as ever! I can’t believe how all consuming this is, am working pretty much solidly from 7am till 11.30pm most days, but I am so grateful for all the emails and support that I have been getting. Lots of people are now posting things about me in various places on the internet too which is exactly what I was hoping for, but it is amazing how many blog's and forums I seem to popping up on!
I have had some interesting media and press developments this week as well. I am meeting with a TV production company in the next few weeks to discuss possible formats for showing the development of aMillionJobsToDo... which is really exciting stuff. The new press release also went out today aptly titled ‘Sod the Recession’ which is really well written (thanks Viky, you are such a star) and I have been in contact with a PR lady in Washington which could be a major development.
Right I have already extended my no work after 10.30pm rule to 11.30pm so must stop now, if I actually log off I might even make it to bed before midnight for once!

Save or Destroy, The Results are In - Friday 31st July 09
What an amazing night! Who would have thought just over a month ago when I started trying to get aMillionJobsToDo... up and running that in a few short weeks I would be managing 3 other people and in control of a job being filmed by ITV!

We actually managed to gain over 500 responses to the poll in a week which was a pretty good return on the 1100 leaflets we initially delivered. The poll was designed to canvas local opinion of a bungalow that was built and then applied for retrospective planning permission which was subsequently turned down and the bungalow was ordered to be demolished.
The results showed a massive 76% of the residents who replied were in favour of the bungalow being left standing, so as you can imagine the client was extremely pleased.
An interesting point in the evening came when I was asked to smash open the ballot boxes using a sledge hammer roughly the same size as me! Very dramatic but I am sure it will make interesting TV (see images below.)

|
Anyway after a tense double count the results were in and we were able to determine that the poll had in fact gone in the clients favour. I then had a very interesting discussion with an opposing resident over the integrity of the poll and was able to answer him both efficiently and eloquently (even if i do say so myself!) as we had put so many measures in place for precisely that reason. Not bad going while I had a film camera being waved in front of my face throughout!!
All in all an extremely successful job for aMillionJobsToDo.

Back on Track - Thursday 30th July 09
Well they were quite possibly the most horrific days of my life and I hope I never have to repeat them – swine flu truly is awful!
Luckily whilst I have been flopped in bed feeling extremely sorry for myself the girls have been amazing. I have 3 other girls working for me on this job and they have really stepped up to the mark to make things carry on regardless of the swine flu!

|
They have been out in all weathers plodding the streets and knocking on every door in Old Marston , carrying the ballot boxes and recording all the data, ready to take to court should the client need it.
|
Am still feeling pretty grotty but as I am not contagious any longer I am going back out tonight to take up the helm and make sure we get every response we possibly can back, ready for tomorrow night when the final count takes place.

Improving - Tuesday 28th July 09
I am staring to see an improvement, My Tamiflu has kicked in and I hope to be well enough (and non-contagious enough) to attend the opening of the ballot box and count at the end of the week.
The total for jobs completed so far, has now also crept to £1524.50 which is fantastic, that's almost enough for the front porch! I had not actually noticed how far I'd come and I really hope that it carries on rising! - Please keep sending in your task requests.

Swine Flu!! - Sunday 26th July 09
I have been struck down with the dreaded swine flu, am gutted!
My on-going task to try and save a bungalow from a demolition order that required 1200 leaflets to be designed, delivered and now collected is in full swing and I am devastated that I am not going to be able to do the collection!! I have had to rope in some external help in the shape of friends and family who are going to do what they can to help me out!

Plodding On - 20th July 09
Things have been going quite well. Jobs are coming in steady and often and this is really starting to prove profitable. I have 5 logo designs to complete this weekend and a leaflet to design for a ballot poll that I am beginning next week.
The website has now had over 2500 web hits too in 3 weeks, which I am told for a new site is pretty good going! It's still early days and I've got to say I'm amazed at the response/feedback I've been getting. Thanks to everyone who's emailed in, and sorry if I've not got back to you yet - got quite a few to get through.
The majority of people I've heard from like the idea, although some people still don't get it and can't seem to break away from the £1 for a million jobs idea and how long it is going to take me to make my million! Anyway just to clarify, so far my tasks have actually been averaging at approximately £26 an hour and I am yet to complete a task worth £1!

External Services Page Launched - Friday 17th July 09

I have now launched an external links and third party services page. I have decided to advertise on behalf of other organisations/businesses and 'one man bands' to help make my service more accessible for the end user and to help promote other people through the interest that aMillionJobs... has been getting!
If you would like to submit your own service to the site then please contact me and I will discuss the options with you. I am going to need to be careful about the types of services that I am willing to list though so please don't be offended if I refuse your application based on a conflict of interests.
I hope to create some fantastic working relationships that will be mutually beneficial and hope to be able to utilise some of the skills offered through others!

Affiliate Scheme Interest - Tuesday 13th July 09
I have now been contacted and asked if I could possibly list other people's services, for people who would be willing to pay to have their details registered, on the site. Sort of an affiliate/sub-contractor/external services page. This is really exciting, I had not thought about trying to earn additional revenue from the website!
I am obviously dubious about adding services on to the site on behalf of others, as this could potentially take tasks away from myself, so I need to give this some serious thought!
Anyway will keep you posted on my decision.

A job I am carrying out in the near future is also being filmed by ITV too for a programme called New Homes from Hell, so this might help to get me some great exposure!

Getting the Word Out - Monday 29th June 09
Basically, Me and my marketing sister Viky have spent the entire weekend pestering everyone that we know, asking them to check out the site, to tell us what they think, and more importantly, to try and get them to send in their tasks!
Despite most people thinking I am mad for taking on so much work when I already have 2 small dependent children and am working as a teacher, the feedback has been very positive. I have even been contacted from a guy in Switzerland who needs some help with a leather wallet... so it's amazing how far the concept has spread already!

First Jobs Received Through the Website - Friday 26th June 09
If you've already been following the story so far, you will know that I had actually completed a few little paid jobs, prior to the website going live. The site has now been live for 4 days and I have already received some great feedback and aMillionJobsToDo... is now making a profit from the Internet too!
I have made £215 in total so far which is fairly amazing to say I have done any advertising or marketing yet and have only distributed one press release!.. Wow this could actually be successful!

|
It's been really hard work so far though too, I've spent the last few days making a novelty birthday cake for a little boys christening, printed 2 hoodies and am about to make a start on some Vinyl wall stickers to decorate a bedroom next month!
Thanks to everyone for your tasks though and please continue to send them in!

aMillionJobsToDo Website is Launched - Sunday 21st June 09

|
I recently had this idea to try and make enough money to buy my dream family home and settled on the concept of trying to complete a million jobs, for a minimum fee of £1 each!
|
I thought, if I combined all my skill sets from my home, personal and work life and that if this captures people's imagination, then I could actually be overloaded with tasks to complete. The way I see it is I've got nothing to lose by trying, I hope to keep my expenditure to an absolute minimum and I'm going to try and not spend any of the money that I make, until I have enough for the house or a hefty deposit!
Anyway, I've spent the last few weeks working with my sister to build the website, registering the domain name, and working out how to get the concept out there and here is the result... if you have any queries please contact me and don't hesitate to send me your tasks!
